Being the car nut that I am, I took the day off and made sure I got a first look at the NYIAS on opening day.  Like the 2004 show, the buzz around the show floor was fuel prices.  Hybrids, especially from the Japanese automakers, gained alot of attention from showgoers.  In addition, hatchbacks could be making a comeback, as both Audi and Mazda received plenty of attention for their hatches - good on fuel as well as space.  So, hop on the 7 train to 42nd St., and take a look at this year's show!

Just like last year, I will begin with the highlights of the show, and my “awards” in certain categories:

Best In Show:  Mercedes SLK55 AMG, Audi A3
Best Updated Model:  Volkswagen Jetta, Mercedes M-Class
Best New Model:  Pontiac Solstice, Lexus GS-Series
Best Convertible:  Pontiac Solstice
Best Sports Car:  Ford GT, Ford Mustang, BMW //M5
Best SUV/ Crossover:  Cadillac SRX, Mercedes M-Class
Best Exotic:  Maserati Quattroporte
Most Buzz:  Mercedes SLK55 AMG, Audi A3, Ford Mustang, Lexus GS

Ford opens the show with the GT exotic.  Notice the crowd of onlookers!

Ford shows off the excellent interior of the new 'Stang, Sirius satellite radio built in.  Very pleasing, and respectful to the Mustang heritage while incorporating modern features into classic design lines.

Mercury shows off its conservatively-designed Montego.  While pleasing to eyes, not a whole lot is new and exciting about the car.  Still, it's a sensible midsize car with a comfortable interior - boring to enthusiasts, but sure to sell in decent numbers.

The tough guy in the Ford family, Land Rover, gives us an inside look at the "guts" of the new LR3.  This was a popular view at this year's show, as many carmakers presented a "stripped" view of their vehicles for all to see.

The undisputed king of station wagons, Volvo, offered a glance of their new XC70R sports wagon.  Not only did this Swede offer a sparkling interior fit for a king, but it came with built-in iPod compatibility through an iPod outlet in the center console.  You can control your iPod music through the stock stereo system for optimal performance and sound quality!
